My daughter, at the age of 7 years, understands what happened to George Floyd. She understands what the police did to him and why people want justice. She understands the chants of “I can’t breathe” and “Hands up, don’t shoot”. We have spoken to her about the privilege she has as a white woman, and what it means to use that privilege for good.
About 10 minutes ago she made a sign and placed it on our window. She made a sign that says, “Treat people the way you want to be treated”. She’s SEVEN! She wanted to join in on the protest, but with the intense police presence, we unfortunately cannot participate with our children.
Children understand what’s going on and children need to become the change that we all want to see. Tell your white kids what’s going on. Explain to them what their privilege means in this country.
I have the unfortunate experience of being part of the minority before moving to the States. I understand what it feels like to be scared of the people who are meant to protect you.
Teach your kids.
