Being an American (Week 3)

So, I am basically two weeks behind on my posts, which means that I will be posting both weeks, one after the other. This week saw a shift from new and exciting, to “family routine”. I got to learn more about how things are done here in the US.

Monday, 13/11 – I got to spend the whole day with Amanda, as we went out for Chipotle. Anyone who enjoys spicy should definitely try Chipotle!! I went “basic”, since I am not nearly as adventurous as most in my family. It was extremely tasty though. Afterwards we went home for the afternoon, before picking the kids up from school. I got to experience my first pizza, as Amanda surprised me with Dominoes!! Afterwards we spent most of our night together, all four of us. Alex got ahold of my phone, and decided to start her own youtube channel, as she recorded videos on my phone. She even went so far as to telling her audiences to “comment down below” and “Follow for more videos like this”. Kids these days get to grow up way too fast. Amanda also introduced me to a new xbox game called Bioshock… It seems fitting that we play games together, considering that we met that way. I loved Geeking with her. Someone who loves the things that I do.

Tuesday, 14/11 – Amanda worked both jobs, so I decided to work on the house. Fortunately, Amanda’s dad came over to help, which made everything super easy. After her dad and I picked up the kids, we decided to have a “pizza and movie” night while I waited for Amanda to get back. We had a lot of fun, watching chicken little and getting Dominoes.

Wednesday, 15/11 – Spent most of the morning and afternoon watching netflix. After she got home, and we picked up the kids, we spent most of the evening playing games together again!! It was so much fun!! We had stroganoff for dinner, and had bagelwiches as midnight snacks… We went to bed later than usual, because you know, gamers don’t sleep much. #WorthIt.

Thursday, 16/11 – We didn’t have the kids, so Amanda and I went searching for bread that didn’t taste like sugarcane… And it didn’t take us long to find it either!! Unfortunately it was like $5.00 per loaf, so it was not a long term solution. Hey, at least I got bread that was edible, even if it was just this one time. We also had Arby’s for lunch. I love Arby’s!!! We spent the rest of the afternoon and evening chilling around the house and just “being” for a change.

Friday, 17/11 – Not too much to report about this day. It was a quiet evening. “Lazy day” as I would call it.

Saturday, 18/11 – Amanda had to work her second job, so I spent most of my Saturday working around the house. She came home with “adulting” stuff though. New cutlery, plates, a new duvet, Christmas stuff, etc!! It felt awesome to be a part of getting new stuff for the house…

Sunday, 19/11 – Amanda’s dad picked me up to spend the day with him! We went down to Apple valley to pick up some stuff, before heading down to Lake City!! I love the drive there – So scenic and tranquil. The drive down to Lake city allows me to just be and “enjoy the view”. And the view is just spectacular… I am a sucker for nature… I always have been, so I will always jump at the opportunity to somehow be in nature. Alex had her camera with her, so she took pictures of everything along the way. Literally everything!! She loves taking pictures, just like her mom!! On the way back, we stopped by Amanda’s work – MORE ADULTING!! We got a family picture frame set, a bread machine, and more stuff for the house!!

Week three was busy in its own right. Busy in a different way. I have a lot to learn about “being an American”. Some of that is just because of the fact that I am used to having third world issues. But most of it is cultural. Life is going to be very different here. Social, sport, culture, food, language, and just everything in general. Fortunately I have the best possible support system!! I am forever grateful for the effort that Amanda puts in to make this change easier. I am not worried about adjusting to the ways of the American. I am worried that I will forget about the ways of the South African over time… The kids are learning Afrikaans, and Amanda herself speaks it to me when I least expect it. Just more proof of how amazing she has been. I don’t think that this would have been this easy without the amount of support that she has given me. Every day is a new experience, and every second is an adventure.
